- A person’s perception is influenced by their culture. The people around them can change it. Certain thing that they are taught changes their perception. The upbringing of someone who was raised in a racist family is different from the upbringing of a person raised in an open-minded family. So their perceptions of something such as the differences of other people are different
3. The media plays a huge role in the creation of single stories. In the video Chimamanda talked about her “single story” of Mexico. She thought that Mexico was all about illegal immigrants sneaking across borders and being arrested but when she experienced Mexico for herself she saw something totally different. I bet that if media hadn’t shown Mexico in a negative light nobody would think that way about it without experiencing Mexico for themselves. Media has a big influence on what we think and how we perceive thing.
6. The dangers of a single story perspective is that we Can think a way about something and be completely wrong. What’s even more dangerous about a single story is that that single story can spread to other people. The single story with false information misrepresents the subject of it.
first quote:
I think that the quote is saying that single stories can be told any way. They can be told in a positive way or negative way. When people don’t experience things for themselves they are influenced by the single story about what they are told about that thing. Single stories can make certain people or things seem a certain way. Chimamanda had a single story about her houseboy Fide. She saw him as poor and only poor. She didn't think that anyone poor could be as artistic as fides brother when she saw the piece he made. If Chimamanda hadn't seen fides brother and what he had made she would've kept thinking the same way about poor people and she would've believed the stereotype about them.
I agree with many things you brought up for this response. For the first quote, I also mentioned that perpetuating a single story is often how we separate ourselves from people we don't want to understand.
