The Power of One is a moving yet very depressing story. The story talks about the main character PK as he grows up, and shows the great impact he had on others.
PK is without parents due to his mother dying and his dad being killed when trampled by elephants. His next best friend was given to him as chicken. Soon he was also killed by some boys bullying PK. He was even forced to watch his chicken’s death. Just as a young boy PK loses many figures in his life that were important to him. But that doesn’t end. Geel Piet is killed who taught PK many things important to him. Geel was a role model and acted like a friend and coach towards PK. He cared and gained a relationship with PK. Lastly, his love Maria dies while helping PK. PK must have felt not only sad but guilty because he was some of the reason she was in that situation.

This film was filled with great, moving scenes.  One of my favorites was when all the tribes were singing together as one and PK was leading it all. This showed how great of an impact just one person can have on many. PK showed his determination to help these people although he went through many tragedies himself. Another of my favorites was when Guinea’s wife offers Maria her blanket at the boxing match. This shows her humbleness and the two very different cultures interacting with kindness. Although the book was very sad at times, overall I thought it was a great story.

  1. I agree some scenes were moving but the ones that were the best always seemed forced and rushed upon the viewer.
