One Story Response
I think that we as Americans are especially guilty of having these dangerously stereotypical "one story" viewpoints. Now, before this gets lost with all these other posts I want you to step back for a moment. Asia. What does that word bring to mind? Maybe Chinese food or some Asian joke? Maybe something about their culture? All I know is that our media and what we do in this society has created these images of certain peoples in our minds that is hard to erase. They've created Russia to look like nothing more than a scheming communist regime, (that one's kind of true) and Mexico to be a country full of burrito-eating aliens. I know because of what I've been taught that I sometimes turn to these stereotypes.
The dangers of these perspectives is that once we begin to believe these countries to be the wallowing cesspools they 'appear' to be we will tune out the wonders and benefits of their cultures, people and beliefs. And once we tune out those effects will be lost from our culture too.
As Chimamanda says, you cannot talk about a single story without talking about power. Making a certain culture appear lesser and inadequate is a perfect way to almost justify inhumane dominance and control. Normally the people who are stereotyped don't make up the stereotypes themselves. People who need to control or have something to gain make these biased views to justify what they're doing.
