1) Sometimes, when you are raised a certain way, which could be based on religion, sexuality, nationality, etc., it can change how you feel about something. If you were raised a certain way, with teachings that seems normal to you, it will be weird going and hearing another teaching. You would just block it out because its not what is "normal" to you. In "The Danger of a Single Story", if you hear something, like a sterotype, that goes along with what is normal in society, then you are just going to go along with it.
3) The media plays a huge role in creating single stories. The media plays a role of enforcing single stories because everyone puts their opinion on social media. If one thing gets put that can change everyones opinion and it never goes away. it will be there forever even if it is deleted. So information gets around quicker and it creates a more believable stroy because it is on the internet. Most people tend to believe what they read on the internet because they think it is a reliable source.
6) A single story perspective is a danger. It shows you have no open-mind and that you lock right onto something. This means single stories can be created more often. If a single story gets around and everyone has the same mind set then they are more likely to occour. As a society we do not want this characterisic. Single stories can break people down and there are dangers of breaking the dignity of people for things that were said hat they have no control over. It gives some people "power" that they don't deserve.
The paragraph you wrote for number 6 is phenomenal. I couldn't have said it better myself. I agree with the fact that As a society we don't want this characteristic, however, I feel not enough people think this way. So the issue is never solved.
ReplyDeleteI really like how you connected the single story with rumors that we hear everyday, and I completely agree. We need to be more open minded when we just hear one story.
