The Power of One was a movie that I really enjoyed watching. I thought that the story line involving history period was interesting. I liked visually learning about South Africa and its history. Seeing the way that South Africa was in the movie helped me understand the hardships that the native South Africans endured.
The slum of Alexandria in the movie was depressing to see. I couldn't wrap my head around the idea that there was only one bathroom for every 200 people and that every one lived in tiny shacks with barely any room to move. I know that the movie is part fiction and part non-fiction but either way it’s disturbing to imagine living in such conditions. But what’s even more disturbing to me is that while the people living in the slums suffered the wealthy white English and Afrikaners lived it up in their immaculate mansions and schools. I thought it was sad that Maria didn't know how native blacks lived and how bad that they were really treated. When she finds out by going to the slums with Peekay she gets a wake up call. I was glad when she finally saw that her dad was one of the people responsible for the oppression of natives. When she and Peekay talked about the nannies that they had as children she recalled thinking that when her nanny went home, that it was to a home just like hers but just a bit smaller. Never had she thought to a place like Alexandria. The Power of One had an overall exciting and depressing story line. I really enjoyed watching and I would recommend it to anyone to watch.
