3.People's perception of the world is influenced by what their experiences, what they learn in school, their family beliefs, and the information they recieve through media. The stories and how they are presented by the media play a big part in forming people's opinions. The media can either continue showing only the negative side of an issue, but hopefully present a more balanced view. Because the media influences so many peoples' opinions, they have a responsibility to present the full story or all sides of an issue . If not they may only further perpetuate a stereotype or incomplete story.
6.The dangers of a single story perspective is that it limits peoples understnading of the reality or the complete facts related to any issue or belief. For example, the recent immagration of people from South America and Mexico has been portrayed as a threat to the "American way of life". Fears that these immagrants will take jobs away from Americans and other negative stereotypes are an example of a "single story". The dnager this causes is that people may treat Mexicans or South Americans diffrently or badly without any real reason. Another danger people may not think of is that'they' may become the subject of a "single story" themselves.
7. The first thing we can do is indavidualy be aware of the damger of the single story and related stereotypes. Only by being aware can we challenge stereotypes and the harm they cause. Once we are aware, we can futher help reduce stereotypes by sharing stories or experiences that are positive or diffrent from the negative stereotypes that everyone talks about. Also, we can challenge the media or others who only tell single stories. We can do this, by asking the media to represent the diffrent groups of people more accurately, without relying heavily on stereotypes to create such dynamic characters.
"The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story."
-Chimamanda Adichie
I completely agree with Chimamanda. Creating stereotypes enables us to ignore the diffrences between individuals. So if people know that it's not right, why does it make it okay for us to just automatically judge others. I feel like people/media use stereotypes to simplify the world around us, they reduce the amount of processing a person has to do when they meet someone for the first time. By using stereotypes, we automatically infer that a person has a wide range of abilities. We can fix these problems exposing ourselves to diffrent experience, such as stepping out of your ususal routines. This ways, you may better understand how people who are diffrent from you feel.
I like what you said about how stereotypes enable us to ignore the differences between individuals. I completely agree with that statement, and when I read that I immediately think of how people associate Muslim people with terrorists. A stereotype has allowed us to say these things and it isn't fair.
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way about stereotypes and that you should not judge a book by its cover over all it was good
