The danger of a single story

Stereotypes are really the base of american knowledge on foreign countries. The knowledge we "know" about countries is pretty much 99% stereotypes like that all Canadians say sorry? Or that Russians drink vodka like water and that any Mexican could be an illegal immigrant. All theese steryotypes are based off of American perspective. Now there's probably countless countries who have their steryotypes about America that we're all fat and stupid and lazy and so on. Which not to mention is partially but not completely true. But all steryotypes are one sided and based on one perspective.

the dangers of a single story perspective are that you can be told one thing and if it is believable you will believe it which it could be false. But story's can follow us our whole life. And and if we live with that story we will live believe ing it. Let's say it's something like anybody with blonde hair is evil and has a diabolical plan to destroy the world and we are told some big explanation and we only hear from non blondes. Now wed believe it because no one would testify except blondes. But if we'd heard the side of it from blondes then they'd tell us that that's false and nothing more than a myth.

Single stories create steryotypes and steryotypes can be turned into jokes (which they have) and be told on for centuries adichie talked about how her roommate was shocked that she listened to Beyoncé and other pop stars because we're basically taught that Africans are all poor and have little to nothing. But she turned out to end up in college. Based on what we know is one sided. And there are always more than one side to every story.

  1. Well the first paragraph stereotypes are kinda' true. Russians do drink a lot of vodka but it's true that our media has portrayed others as only one thing

  2. excellent choice of vocabulary in the second paragraph. I also much enjoyed your opinion on what the danger of a single story can do to one's life.
